“Small Penalties” in April Analog

Published by at 3:11 pm under Writing

The April 2011 issue of Analog Science Fiction & Fact just arrived in my mailbox, and I was pleased (well, that’s an understatement) to see my story “Small Penalties” in it as the Probability Zero piece. I’d been expecting it, but I just didn’t know when. I’m sharing the table of contents with several Big Name authors, including Larry Niven. His story “The Flare Weed” (another in his Draco Tavern series) is in the magazine immediately before mine. I think that’s neat.

“Small Penalties” is a suggestion as to what to do with spammers. It’s unlikely to ever be implemented, hence its designation as Probability Zero, but it’s such a small penalty . . . per piece of spam. It should be on the stands soon, keep an eye out for it.

There’s more in the works. A longer story will be out in another month or two, and I have a couple of submissions in the queue. And now I need to get back to writing more.

Congrats, Al! A TOC with Larry Niven!!! **jealous** Looks like a great cover, too. Looking forward to seeing your T-Space story in print.

Thanks Brad. Any idea which issue(s) of Analog your next story(ies) will be in?

Nope, no idea. Trevor hasn’t mailed me anything yet. I am trying to be patient.

Hey, I like the updated header banner with the aerospace plane! The penguin was cute, but I think I like the new look better. Is that specifically a T-Space logo?

I thought you’d received the galleys? I think the issue appears about two months after the galleys, but that’s my guess based on a small sample.

Thanks for the banner comment. The logo was adapted from the covers for some of my e-pubbed stories on Amazon. The ship should really have a thicker body, this image was based on the old HL-10 experimental lifting body, and yes it’s a “Sapphire” class ship like that owned by Jason Curtis in those stories, and Jackie Roberts in The Chara Talisman.

Hey Al, I read Larry Niven’s latest piece and your latest PZ story while I was on lunch break with the Army Reserve today. I must say, you and Larry have the gift of telling very good, very short stories. I am always amazed at that. I enjoyed imagining the spammer’s comeuppance and was amused at how you constructed that — a fitting punishment for the crime!! Well done, and can’t wait to see your next stuff.

FYI, Trevor tells me mine will be out “soonish” so that could mean in the next 4 to 6 issues I guess. (grin)
