Taprobane (Epsilon Indi III) is a terraformed planet, home to the Timoans. The climate is cool, the planet being near the outer edge of the habitable zone.

The sole human settlement is Clarkeville, a small university town built to resemble the more advanced native timoan villages, locate on the island of Borealia. It is home to Kangara University, a joint human-timoan facility for both the study of timoans by humans and the transfer of technology to select timoans.

The campus includes a pub, the Pragarth Maga which in the language of the local timoans, means roughly "albino deer". This is a deliberate play on "white hart", as in Arthur C. Clarke's (for whom Clarkeville is named) stories Tales of the White Hart.

Taprobane is named for the Earth island also known as Ceylon or Sri Lanka, south east of India, and home to Sir Arthur Clarke for most of his adult life. Given the low average temperature of the planet, the name is ironic.
