Third planet of [[Delta Pavonis]] system (Delta Pavonis III). Planet has a distinctive greenish hue from space, for which it is named. This is due to extensive jungle coverage, high ocean plankton level, and aerophytoplankton also known as [[skyweed]], an airborne algae.

Currently T-Space stories can be grouped into three eras:

* First steps (circa 2070) when man develops an effective warp drive and starts exploring the nearer stars. (''Alpha Centauri'' series)
* Jason's era (circa 2090s) warp ships have become affordable to well-off groups and individuals, and uncontrolled exploration is beginning
* First contact (circa 2120) planets around the nearer stars are well-settled, there are a few colonies at the fringe, and we're starting to realize there are other star-farers around (''The Chara Talisman'', ''The Reticuli Deception'', ''The Eridani Convergence'')

Because a human lifespan easily overlaps these, it's possible that a given character may show up in stories in different eras (aged appropriately, of course).

At the end of [[The Eridani Convergence]], Homeworld Security agent Jordan Burnside was about to investigate a Velkaryan operation on the planet Verdigris, in the Delta Pavonis system. Jackie Roberts and company were expecting to return there to pick him up, but were sidetracked by the events of [[The Centauri Surprise]]. This novel follows Burnside's adventures on Verdigris, and then the round about voyage of the ''Sophie'' to pick him up without tipping off the Velkaryans.

Carson stays behind on this one, to both his and Jackie's consternation, but Ducayne has another job for him. The folks at Grainger Station at Proxima-b have discovered what might be archeological ruins, extremely unlikely on a non-Terraformed red dwarf star planet, and Carson is to check them out.

Meanwhile, Roberts and the Homeworld Security agents with her aboard the Sophie make some interested red dwarf planet discoveries of their own, and the situation gets worse when the finally rendezvous with Burnside and find out what the Velkaryans have been up to.

The novel picks up shortly after the events of ''The Eridani Convergence,'' focusing on events in the Alpha Centauri system. Hannibal Carson receives a package of presumed-illicit artifacts from someone who inherited them. The collection contains another of the "pyramid key" talismans, and this one seems to point to the Alpha Centauri system itself. But there are no known pyramids on either Kakuloa or Sawyers World ... or are there?

Meanwhile Rico, who has been missing and presumed dead since ''The Reticuli Deception,'' wakes up in a traumapod at an unknown location, and is being asked awkward questions.

Carson and Jackie Roberts arrange to meet Peter Finley, one of the first settlers on Sawyers World, and the geologist who discovered "Pete's Peak," the suggestively pyramid-like feature he declared to be a old volcanic neck. After some discussion, Carson decides that the peak is worth checking out anyway, but of course there's a catch. It's in the middle of a no-humans-allowed wildlife preserve, and neither Carson nor Homeworld Security want anyone to know the real reason Carson might be interested in it.

Roberts and the ''[[Sophie]]'', meanwhile, are dispatched on a resupply run to the closed-to-outsiders base on Proxima b, a planet orbiting Centauri system's red dwarf companion. It isn't the first time she's been to a red dwarf planet, but she learns something interesting here. When she returns to Sawyers World, Ducayne calls on her to help evaluate some high tech alien artifacts brought back from the Chara pyramid.

Of course the [[Velkaryan]]s have taken an interest in what Carson is up to, and Rico's old Velkaryan nemesis from Earth has recently arrived on Sawyers World.

Throw in a wargame exercise between the UDT Space Force and the independent Sawyers World Space Guard, and there's plenty of room for surprises.

Like opening up nesting matryoshka dolls, this book ties up some loose ends from earlier in the series, while laying groundwork for things to come. Just when you think one puzzle is solved, ''suprise'', there's another inside it.

The latter in turn are the prelude to "the war novels", which are only loosely defined at this point. The rise of the [[Velkaryans]] on Earth and within T-Space vaguely parallels the rise of the Nazis in 1930s Europe, but there are also the mysterious [[Kesh]] and [[Deghidesh]]. These will be set some time after the Carson & Roberts era, and technology will have advanced some. == Places in T-Space ==

T-Space, Terraform(ed) Space, can have several meanings depending on context. In general it refers to the roughly 50 lightyear diameter sphere of explored (for various values of explored) space centered on the Solar System. It could also refer to the set of stars with terraformed planets, a set of as-yet undetermined extent, which the above spheroid is included in. At its most restricted it refers just to the dozen or so settled systems between which regular travel occurs (thus including e.g. DeltaPavonis but excluding [[Chara]] ).

As far as possible, the astronomy or stellar cartography of the T-Space stories is accurate. If I write that Verdigris, a planet around Delta Pavonis, is 19.9 light years from here and 16.5 light years from Alpha Centauri, you can trust those numbers (for the stars, anyway). I spend a fair bit of time working out 3-D relationships between stars using the best data we have (as well as some great tools like Celestia for visualizing same). Of course, I have no way of knowing if there’s actually a planet matching Verdigris’ description orbiting Delta Pavonis, (I'd be as surprised as anybody if there was) and indeed the rate at which we’re discovering exoplanets — planets around other stars — is a little scary in that any time now we could discover planets around Delta Pavonis, or any of the other stars mentioned in my stories, that would make that aspect obsolete. That’s an occupational hazard of writing “hard” science fiction; look at how much what we know about the Solar System has changed since the early days of Heinlein and Clarke. For that matter, Larry Niven’s first sold story was rendered obsolete by astronomical observation before it saw print (but they went ahead and printed it anyway, it’s still a good story, titled “The Coldest Place”). To say nothing of canals on Mars or rainy swamps on Venus.

=== Naming/numbering Conventions ===

All stars mentioned in the T-space series are real and as described (although their planets may be fictional). There may be one or two exceptions further from Earth for story reasons. If so, these will be located in areas not visible from Earth (e.g. occluded by a nearer star.) Many stars have multiple names: some have a common name (like Sirius or Chara), most have a constellation name (such as Alpha Centauri or Epsilon Eridani) and all will have one or more catalog numbers (Wolf 359, BD +5 3189, etc).

Planets, other than a proper name (Mars, Kakuloa, Sawyers World) are labelled in traditional science fiction notation, a roman numeral indicating its position from the primary. Thus, Earth is Sol III, Mars is Sol IV, etc. This differs from the current astronomical naming convention where exoplanets are labelled with a lower-case letter indicating the order of discovery. The primary star is always "a", the first planet discovered is "b", the second "c", and so on (thus, Proxima Centauri b is the first planet discovered around Proxima Centauri). Given the current state of the art, we can't be sure we've discovered all the planets in a star system, or even be completely certain of their distance order, so this makes more sense than the science fictional roman numeral system. When we can visit the star system and photograph it from multiple different angles, picking out all the planets and determining their sequence is much easier.

Ships in the T-Space stories are often identified by type or class, instead of or in addition to name. In later stories (after the first expeditions, when interstellar travel has become more routine), ships are identified by both a letter class (eg S-class) and/or a model name (for example, Sapphire or Sandquist). There is no requirement for the model name to have the first letter, and indeed for some classes (eg Y, IP) it makes little sense, but it is a common convention.

An older class of ship, first after the original ships of the original Alpha Centauri expedition. This is a double star, 19.7 light years from Sol, with the primary (A) being an orange K3 star, similar to Alpha Centauri B. Its companion, B, is an M type dwarf, orbiting at some 40 to 50 AU (check this).

The habitable zone for star A is between 0.457 and 0.904 AUs, centering on 0.680 AU, almost the same distance as Venus from Sol. The orbit at that distance would be 226 standard (Earth) days.

A yellow-orange dwarf star (type G5-8 V-IV) [Wikipedia says G8-IV] about 19.9 light years from our sun, Sol. Very slightly larger [1.22 Rsol, Wiki], heavier [but Wiki says 0.991 Msol] and brighter [1.22x Sol] than Sol. A planet in its habitable zone would be slightly further from it than Earth is from the Sun, and its year would be about a month longer than Earth's (410 days). Figures for its metallicity range from 0.95 to 2.7 times as enriched as Sol [Wiki 2.14x for Fe], and while its age is unknown [Wiki 6.6 to 6.9 GY], it could be as much as 2 billion years older than our sun.

Temp of atmosphere: 5604K (vs 5780 for Sol)

Luminosity: 1.22 Sol (or 1.26?)

Abs Magnitude: 4.62

We assume a luminosity of 1.22 and, based on this, a mass of 1.0685.

Third planet of [[Delta Pavonis]] system (Delta Pavonis III). Planet has a distinctive greenish hue from space, for which it is named. This is due to extensive jungle coverage, high ocean plankton level, and aerophytoplankton also known as [[skyweed]], an airborne algae.

The novel picks up where ''The Reticuli Deception'' leaves off, with the [[Velkaryan]] ship ''Carcharodon'' finding itself in deep space, headed toward Sol. They divert toward [[82 Eridani]], a star with a settled planet, [[Tanith]], not far off their course.

Star pilot Jaqueline "Jackie" Roberts, is returning Marten, a [[timoan]] archeologist colleague of Carson's, to his home world of [[Taprobane]], with plans to head toward Skead, orbiting [[Tau Ceti]], after that. While there, she gets a message from Ducayne requesting her to continue on to 82 Eridani to meet an agent of his and pick something up.

Archeologist Hannibal Carson is helping Quentin Ducayne's people review old UFO files taken from the Blue Book archives in ''Reticuli'' when word comes of the Belize find, mentioned at the end of ''Reticuli''. A while later, Ducayne has a mission for Carson -- go to 82 Eridani to examine the object Roberts is retrieving, and help her out if needed.

When Roberts and later Carson arrive, they realize that the Velkaryans have been there for a while, and something is up.

Roberts's contact has a contact of his own, and the artifact they're retrieving wasn't found on Tanith. Meanwhile, the Velkaryans take violent action, and the political balance in T-Space shows signs of shifting.

Currently T-Space stories can be grouped into three eras:

* First steps (circa 2070) when man develops an effective warp drive and starts exploring the nearer stars. (''Alpha Centauri'' series)
* Jason's era (circa 2090s) warp ships have become affordable to well-off groups and individuals, and uncontrolled exploration is beginning
* First contact (circa 2120) planets around the nearer stars are well-settled, there are a few colonies at the fringe, and we're starting to realize there are other star-farers around (''The Chara Talisman'', ''The Reticuli Deception'', ''The Eridani Convergence'')

Tau Ceti is a Sun-like (G type) star about 11.9 light years from here; it's the closest single such star to us (the [[Alpha Centauri]] system is closer and has a sun-like star, but is a multiple). As such it's been a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tau_Ceti_in_fiction popular place] in science fiction, authors from Asimov to Zsoldos have set novels or parts of novels there.

It's a much older star than its near neighbor, [[Epsilon Eridani]] (about 5.5 ly away from τ Ceti), and like that star we believe it has planets, as well as a dust/asteroid disk, bigger than ours but smaller than [[Epsilon Eridani|ε Eridani's]]. This disk seems to be towards the outer part of the system, whereas the so-far discovered planets are fairly close in. The star itself is a bit smaller, cooler and dimmer than our own Sun, which moves the habitable zone in closer, but it is still quite a bit brighter and warmer than K-type stars like ε Eridani or [[Alpha Centauri|α Centauri B]].

So far in T-Space I haven't written much about Tau Ceti. In ''The Chara Talisman'' (aka ''The Venaticorum Archive''), a world circling it is the location of Port Skead, the main spaceport in the system and home base for [[Jackie Roberts]] and her ship ''[[Sophie]]''. It's a bit over 13.5 light years from α Centauri, so it takes about ten days in warp to get there from [[Sawyers World]] or [[Kakuloa]]. Once there, it's only a four day trip to ε Eridani.

As the above chart shows, there is some question as to whether my hypothetical Tau Ceti III, Skead, is really habitable. It appears to lie just to the warm side of the habitable zone (and IV just to the zone's cold side). Further, both III and IV seem to mass anywhere from 3 to 5 times Earth. That would give them a surface gravity of about 1.5 (depending on density, etc), which might be tolerable, but would also mean a very high escape velocity. This would be beyond anything but multiple stage chemical rockets, but is probably within the capability of the fusion/plasma engines of later T-Space, especially with some aerodynamic lift. However, the above data is very preliminary (and noisy), and contradicts earlier (circa 2015) conclusions about planets in the system.

Of course, the give mass (3 to 5 Earths) isn't ''necessarily'' in a single planet. If we take the lower bound (3 M⊕), we can split that into a double planet, say one at 2.5 M⊕ and the other at 0.5 M⊕, or 2 M⊕ and 1 M⊕. They wouldn't necessarily both be habitable, but if the smaller one orbited within the eclipse region of the larger (depending on orbital inclination relative to the primary star), it would be shaded for a portion of every orbit, making it cooler (thus more habitable) than otherwise. Currently the data is too noisy to disprove the double-planet conjecture.

I dunno what that would do for the coffee crop, though.

More calculation needed.

Update: Assume III-1 (Skead) mass 3.1 Me, III-2 mass 0.3 Me, III-1 is the terraformed one, III-2 is vaguely terraform? would it tidal lock in 65 my? Surface gravs ~1.46 and ~0.57 respectively. Skead is heavy but do-able (take-off barely possible with chemical, okay with plasma).

Note 12/15/19: For mass ~3.1, radius 1.46e, density 5.52, sfc grav is 1.46g. For radius 1.45e, density 5.6, sfc grav is 1.47g
- more realistically, per Seager2007, radius would be ~1.35, density ~6.9, sft grav 1.69g (due to compression of rocks)

== Places in T-Space ==

T-Space, Terraform(ed) Space, can have several meanings depending on context. In general it refers to the roughly 50 lightyear diameter sphere of explored (for various values of explored) space centered on the Solar System. It could also refer to the set of stars with terraformed planets, a set of as-yet undetermined extent, which the above spheroid is included in. At its most restricted it refers just to the dozen or so settled systems between which regular travel occurs (thus including e.g. DeltaPavonis but excluding [[Chara]] ).

As far as possible, the astronomy or stellar cartography of the T-Space stories is accurate. If I write that Verdigris, a planet around Delta Pavonis, is 19.9 light years from here and 16.5 light years from Alpha Centauri, you can trust those numbers (for the stars, anyway). I spend a fair bit of time working out 3-D relationships between stars using the best data we have (as well as some great tools like Celestia for visualizing same). Of course, I have no way of knowing if there’s actually a planet matching Verdigris’ description orbiting Delta Pavonis, (I'd be as surprised as anybody if there was) and indeed the rate at which we’re discovering exoplanets — planets around other stars — is a little scary in that any time now we could discover planets around Delta Pavonis, or any of the other stars mentioned in my stories, that would make that aspect obsolete. That’s an occupational hazard of writing “hard” science fiction; look at how much what we know about the Solar System has changed since the early days of Heinlein and Clarke. For that matter, Larry Niven’s first sold story was rendered obsolete by astronomical observation before it saw print (but they went ahead and printed it anyway, it’s still a good story, titled “The Coldest Place”). To say nothing of canals on Mars or rainy swamps on Venus.

=== Naming/numbering Conventions ===

All stars mentioned in the T-space series are real and as described (although their planets may be fictional). There may be one or two exceptions further from Earth for story reasons. If so, these will be located in areas not visible from Earth (e.g. occluded by a nearer star.) Many stars have multiple names: some have a common name (like Sirius or Chara), most have a constellation name (such as Alpha Centauri or Epsilon Eridani) and all will have one or more catalog numbers (Wolf 359, BD +5 3189, etc).

Planets, other than a proper name (Mars, Kakuloa, Sawyers World) are labelled in traditional science fiction notation, a roman numeral indicating its position from the primary. Thus, Earth is Sol III, Mars is Sol IV, etc. This differs from the current astronomical naming convention where exoplanets are labelled with a lower-case letter indicating the order of discovery. The primary star is always "a", the first planet discovered is "b", the second "c", and so on (thus, Proxima Centauri b is the first planet discovered around Proxima Centauri). Given the current state of the art, we can't be sure we've discovered all the planets in a star system, or even be completely certain of their distance order, so this makes more sense than the science fictional roman numeral system. When we can visit the star system and photograph it from multiple different angles, picking out all the planets and determining their sequence is much easier.

== Places in T-Space ==

T-Space, Terraform(ed) Space, can have several meanings depending on context. In general it refers to the roughly 50 lightyear diameter sphere of explored (for various values of explored) space centered on the Solar System. It could also refer to the set of stars with terraformed planets, a set of as-yet undetermined extent, which the above spheroid is included in. At its most restricted it refers just to the dozen or so settled systems between which regular travel occurs (thus including e.g. DeltaPavonis but excluding [[Chara]] ).

As far as possible, the astronomy or stellar cartography of the T-Space stories is accurate. If I write that Verdigris, a planet around Delta Pavonis, is 19.9 light years from here and 16.5 light years from Alpha Centauri, you can trust those numbers (for the stars, anyway). I spend a fair bit of time working out 3-D relationships between stars using the best data we have (as well as some great tools like Celestia for visualizing same). Of course, I have no way of knowing if there’s actually a planet matching Verdigris’ description orbiting Delta Pavonis, (I'd be as surprised as anybody if there was) and indeed the rate at which we’re discovering exoplanets — planets around other stars — is a little scary in that any time now we could discover planets around Delta Pavonis, or any of the other stars mentioned in my stories, that would make that aspect obsolete. That’s an occupational hazard of writing “hard” science fiction; look at how much what we know about the Solar System has changed since the early days of Heinlein and Clarke. For that matter, Larry Niven’s first sold story was rendered obsolete by astronomical observation before it saw print (but they went ahead and printed it anyway, it’s still a good story, titled “The Coldest Place”). To say nothing of canals on Mars or rainy swamps on Venus.

All stars mentioned in the T-space series are real and as described (although their planets may be fictional). There may be one or two exceptions further from Earth for story reasons. If so, these will be located in areas not visible from Earth (e.g. occluded by a nearer star.) Many stars have multiple names: some have a common name (like Sirius or Chara), most have a constellation name (such as Alpha Centauri or Epsilon Eridani) and all will have one or more catalog numbers (Wolf 359, BD +5 3189, etc).

Planets, other than a proper name (Mars, Kakuloa, Sawyers World) are labelled in traditional science fiction notation, a roman numeral indicating its position from the primary. Thus, Earth is Sol III, Mars is Sol IV, etc. This differs from the current astronomical naming convention where exoplanets are labelled with a lower-case letter indicating the order of discovery. The primary star is always "a", the first planet discovered is "b", the second "c", and so on (thus, Proxima Centauri b is the first planet discovered around Proxima Centauri). Given the current state of the art, we can't be sure we've discovered all the planets in a star system, or even be completely certain of their distance order, so this makes more sense than the science fictional roman numeral system. When we can visit the star system and photograph it from multiple different angles, picking out all the planets and determining their sequence is much easier.
